Welcome to Tunø – a small island of just 348 ha. About 4 km long and a little over 1 km across at its widest spot! The vast majority of the island became a protected area in 1965. This does not, however, include the village, two holiday cottage districts and the wood, which is owned by the church. Making Tunø a protected area was an attempt to preserve its identity as a quiet farming area with a varied and distinctive landscape, and to safeguard its status as a haven for tourists wanting to get away from it all.
The major part of Tunø is no longer farmland, but consists of wooded areas, disused fields and ungrazed common land. The closure of the dairy on Tunø in 1964 and the slaughterhouse in Odder in 1987 meant a drastic reduction in livestock farming on the island. There is, however, still some sheep-farming.
Tunø is located in the Kattegat Sea in one of the areas in Denmark with the least annual rainfall. The insular climate also means a high number of sunshine hours. Besides, the island enjoys very mild winters.
The special climate on Tunø makes it particularly suited for growing asparagus, early potatoes, Hamburg parsley and leeks.
Tunø wildlife is unique, as there are neither foxes, moles nor squirrels.
About 110 people live permanently on Tunø.
