Thunø Kro (Inn) is one of the eating places on the island where you can enjoy a nice meal in pleasant surroundings.
Thunø Kro (Inn) is one of the eating places on the island where you can enjoy a nice meal in pleasant surroundings.
Built in 1881, it was originally a school – replacing the old thatched school building that was erected 100 years earlier in the same spot.
The school was situated along the road leading up to the church. The central room was used as a schoolroom, and there was a flat for the teacher in the southern end of the house. The rooms closest to the church served as stabling and outhouses.
The island’s children went to school here until 1957 when the present school was built.
A local family bought the old school building and converted it into a guest house and restaurant. Family celebrations, funeral gatherings and much else was held here. The guest house closed down in 1986, but reopened in 1989 as Thunø Kro.
The redbrick building opposite the inn formerly served as stabling for the vicarage. Built in 1879, it is now Tunø Museum. On the other side of the main street Hovedgaden is the stone house ‘Stenhuset’, which houses the local history archives of Tunø together with the island’s newspaper, Tunø Avis and Tunø Netcafé – both recent initiatives.
