Tunø Co-operative Dairy was established in 1887-88. The reason for this was the change-over to dairy farming that was increasingly taking place all over Denmark.
The first dairy was located in the centre of the village. In 1913, a new modern dairy with an adjacent house for the dairy manager was built.
In the beginning, there was a veritable flux of new managers – a rule stipulated that the manager had to be single, but quite often a dairy manager would fall for one of the young girls on the island. Who knows, perhaps the house that came with the job was too small to house a whole family? From 1903, however, this rule was ditched.
Getting enough fuel for the dairy could be quite a problem. Coal was used, but it had proved difficult to get hold of during World War I. This meant that a stretch of woodland near the Reef had to be sacrificed and peat was also used extensively. The same problem recurred during World War II with the result that the dairy was in operation on alternate days only.
In 1964, Tunø Co-operative Dairy was closed down. The times no longer favoured the small dairies, and the farmers on the island had to find new ways of earning a living. The dairy is now a guest house known as the ‘Old Dairy’.
