We are now standing by the former customs house in Hou. Emil von Holstein-Rathlou, the local landowner, who owned the estates of Rathlousdal and Gersdorffslund acquired his first yacht Echo at the tender age of 18. He was frequently out at sea for longer or shorter periods. In November 1872, the boat ran close to the isles of Lolland-Falster when a great storm surge battered the coast. Echo’s skipper, a Mr Enevold Sørensen, managed single-handedly to save the yacht from sinking. In 1874 and by way of thanking the skipper for his heroic deed, Holstein-Rathlou built him a villa on the corner of Søndergade and Havnegade in Hou. In 1892, the customs authorities acquired the building and, for approx. 80 years, it served as a customs house. Since the early 1970s, however, the house has been privately owned. Looking north, you will see Søndergade – Hou’s so-called ‘shopping street’. Over the years, many different shops and businesses were located here, including a temperance hotel, a pub, and an inn.
