The property's inspector, Superintendent Hans Peter Kjeldsen and his wife found the remains of a burnt magazine on the steps of the kitchen staircase. The paint on both step and wall around where the fire started were scorched, but there was no actual burning of the woodwork. Several of the property's occupants had seen the charred paper debris but had not given it much thought. There was an investigation into whether some of the children in the property had set fire to the magazine out of boredom or curiosity. However, when the technical studies showed that it was Nazi magazine which had been burnt, it opened up the possibility that it could have been the work of the resistance.
