The attack was carried out by a man employed at the gasworks. After inspecting the gas meter, he announced that it needed to be replaced. A few days later along with the new gas meter, he smuggled in 22.5 kg of plastic explosives. In the explosion, the entire building collapsed so that only the gables were left and both the hot water and gas lines were destroyed. In addition, at least 18 Germans were killed, mainly police soldiers.
