The cruiser was docked at a quay by the East Quay. Sabotage was made against the cruiser by using some transport channels that ran under the quay. Here the explosive device could be planted without being seen. In the explosion, 40-50m of the east quay was blown to pieces, and two cranes crashed into the water. The damage was so extensive that the quay was temporarily out of service and NÜRNBERG had to be towed away.
