In recent months, the hall had been used exclusively for the testing of barrage balloons and the like for the Wehrmacht. However, there were no barrage balloons or other materials in storage when the sabotage took place. In the evening, unknown perpetrators had sneaked into the hall and planted one or two explosive charges there. The building caught fire in the explosion and was quickly engulfed in flames. The entire hall burned down. Some peat sheds and smaller wooden sheds in the immediate vicinity were also severely damaged by the fire.
