The fire was ignited using two English-origin firebombs, so-called "flower vases". These were planted in piles of flax. The leaders of the resistance had banned sabotaging the flax-scutching mill, but having been inspired by similar attacks which had been described in the illegal press, the two saboteurs decided to sabotage the company anyway. In November, Svend Johansen took part in the successful sabotage against the Langå bridges but was arrested by Gestapo a few days after. He was sentenced to death and executed by shooting along with three other saboteurs from Randers.
