The action was carried out by approx. 15 men who had sailed to the shipyard. The guards voluntarily disarmed and the bombs were planted. The guards were sent into bomb shelters and the saboteurs sailed away. The powerful bombs (a total of 187 kg explosives) caused considerable damage, though German production was only slightly affected. On the way to the sabotage, 4 men from Holger Danske were arrested by a German port patrol for trying to steal a boat. They were released after eight days. The attack was planned by Jørgen Kieler and Georg Jensen in December 1943 and approved by the management of Holger Danske, which is why BOPA's sabotage on 8th January came as a surprise.
