The easternmost tip of Tunø is known as Revet (The Reef). In former times, the Reef was very treacherous for shipping, because it stretched far out in an easterly direction; the only warning being the visible surf in strong winds. Seals and great cormorants (Phalacrocorax carbo) use the reef as a resting place. Through the ages, there have been several shipwrecks at the Reef. In Tunø church, there is a commemorative flag from one such shipwreck. The flag shows a ship in distress and a woman being rescued from the sea by her hair. This flag was presented by a Mrs Dorothea Schwartzes in grateful commemoration of her husband’s rescue from a wrecked ship in 1713. Dorothea was a Norwegian captain’s wife. Tunø Campsite is located between the Reef and the harbour. In the 1950s, many people just pitched their tents here without special permission, and since there were no sanitary facilities, conditions deteriorated and became filthy. At the time of the local government merger in 1970, a municipal campsite was established with toilet and shower facilities on the harbour. From 2015 cabins will be available at the campsite. The campsite is supervised by the Tunø harbour master.
