On the night of April 1st, 1944 three SOE agents were airdropped to various drop zones in Jutland. SOE agent Johan Erik Hecht-Johansen ("Lofty") was dropped at Fussingø west of Randers. At the beginning of the war, he had stayed in Argentina and had come to England in 1942, where soon after he was recruited by the SOE. The plan was for him to work with the illegal press and propaganda in Copenhagen, but the SOE leader, Flemming B. Muus did not support the work. Consequently, Hecht-Johansen was sent to Funen, as an assistant to the SOE agent, Peter Carlsen. His primary task was to establish military groups for the underground army. In June 1944, Carlsen was wanted by the Germans, and he fled Denmark. Hecht-Johansen took his place in regional command and worked as the SOE leader on Funen.
